I am thinking about getting Ethan this computer. It will be his 1st computer and he is approaching 9 years old in November. It will be used for school work and communicating with me. He is in Hawaii/Maui and I am in the RPI. Thanks in advance for your suggestions.

edit: It will be a long time before I can afford another for him. I do realize there are less expensive Refurbs.

FWIW, my 14 year old greatly preferred a Macbook to an iMac when given the choice.

Same experience here. Two teen boys. Both much preferred a portable to a desktop.

My concern is the portable /Laptop will dive dive dive and be suicidal TongueBig Grin. *(:>*
JDC I only have the iMac 3.06 Intel Core Duo. Pricing has changed and availability influences this call. *(:>*

Pretty heavy duty. And nice.

I second the desktop approach. A laptop becomes a 'toy' for a child of that age, and WILL become broken. The iMac is more of an appliance, and stays on the desk and is respected. My 13 year old has *borrowed* my wife's netbook/hackintosh, and the damn thing is always stuffed in a sofa or left on the floor. I fully expect someone to sit/stomp on it soon. Kids should only get their hands on a laptop that is unkillable (Clamshell, toughbook) or when they're mature enough to keep 'em safe.

The idea of a regular iChat schedule is excellent.... I remember being half a world away from my wife and then 1 year old daughter for over half a year.. it was hell.

FWIW, think of an El Gato TV tuner, and it becomes a nice television as well for those edumaficational programs.

I chose this one over that one:

500 GB has not been enough for about 2 years . . . it benchmarks higher than the newer one on most everyday tasks. And it doesn't have a useless hole for which nothing is made . . .

My 16 year-old grandson abandoned a desktop iMac for his MacBook three years ago, nows he's abandoned both for his new (non refurbed) 1st gen $399 iPad. You can find them for about $300 if you will settle for a 16 gig, we went for 32.

Dual core 3.6 over a quad core 2.7?

If that hole you're talking about is ThunderHole - its time will come. Firewire is just as likely to go unused by a 9 year old.
