Any way to keep my gmail address (which is tied to my Google Profile) private (or vice versa)?
#1
I basically have two email addresses I use on a regular basis: my fastmail address is my primary address that's tied to just about everything. If one were to google my fastmail address, they would find many links pointing back to me, including my full name, what my profession is, etc. From that info, I'm sure someone could find out my home address, etc.

I also have a gmail address. That's the address I use for craigslist transactions and I do A LOT of buying and selling on CL. As you know, CL is littered with unsavory types and that's why I use my gmail address. If one were to google my gmail address, there's not much info they'd be able to find out about me EXCEPT that it links back to my Google Profile (first hit in fact).

Obviously, therein lies the dilemma. I'd like my Google Profile to reflect who I really am, with my real name, etc., but only if there's a way so that it is in no way connected back to my gmail address (at least via google searches, etc.) or vice versa.

As it is right now, I just have a fake name listed in my Google Profile and have not filled my profile up with anymore personal information.

Any suggestions?

Create a new gmail address for the you that is you, and continue to use your other gmail address for the you that is anonymous.

I thought of that, but that gmail address (that I use for CL) is also tied to everything else Google. I'd rather not create a new one for the profile. However, though, creating a new one to use just for CL is a thought. But then I'd have to fumble with 3 different email addresses. If there's a way to take care of the privacy issue as I described, I'd prefer that over having to create any more gmail addresses.

Well, from what I've been reading, the answer is "No". Of course that may change, as Google makes the same dumb mistakes that Facebook made in terms of privacy, or lack of same.

I couldn't figure out the privacy thing, either. As a result, I have about 6 different gmail addresses. That doesn't include my .mac address, my work address, my ISP address....

The privacy thing isn't the only thing I can'tfigure out. I actually got a Google+ invite from another forum member this past week and would like to "spread the wealth," but I can't for the life of me figure out how to invite others.

Go to your Google + "home" page and on the lower right is a graphic with the header "send invites."

I swear that wasn't there even just a few hours ago. I looked all over on that page and in that lower right corner, the only thing I had was the "Go Mobile" icon. Now the "invites" icon is there.

What did you do? Do you work for the News of the World, you hacker you?

The invite button wasn't there until a few hours ago. I think they turned it on sometime this morning.

As for the masking gmail address, no, I don't think what you want is possible. I believe your gmail address can have any amount of '.' (dot's) in them though so maybe you could hide it that way. Upon googling my email it doesn't appear to matter much where I put the periods. Sorry i couldn't be of more assistance.

What anyone needs to do is invent some sort of email cloaking service where you set it up with your real email but give out your fake address. You can communicate like normal you just always email the service which in turn emails the person you want to talk to. It's seamless to you, just hit reply in your client and also seamless for the person on the other end but they never get your real email.
