No Republican First Lady has since come close to what Mrs. Ford stood for.

A little over an hour. Took a little more time that I thought.

Requiescat indeed. An elegant lady in an inelegant business, but she made a huge difference to many people outside of politics.

kap's post was almost my post.

But then I thought, "you know, someone out there probably either doesn't think what she did was necessarily all that special, or else they think the ones that came later also contributed just as much, or interpret compliments for one as implied condemnations for the unnamed."

Apparently I was right somewhere in there.

First Ladies are nonetheless political figures, and as such get judged in that light. Betty Ford was special; I don't understand why she shouldn't be singled out and applauded for her unique efforts.
