Quicken problems
#1
I'm still using Quicken for Mac 2006 for personal finance on an old iMac G4. When I entered the program this morning I noticed that entries made over the last 3 days do not show up. I no longer have the CD from which the program was installed, so reinstalling the software is not practical. I checked the backup that was done yesterday and the data is not there either. Any ideas what the problem is and how to correct?

It's likely that re-installing wouldn't fix anything anyway. Whatever the problem is, it's most likely in your Quicken database, or preferences file.

I would make backup copied of both of those before trying anything in case things get even worse.

I would try some simple tests of manually adding a single transaction to see if it sticks, then quitting and re-open to make sure it's still there.

There are also a key sequence (cmd-option-i) to re-build the database index that might help.

or ...

Consider joining the herd that has abandoned Quicken for just this kind of reason (in my case, it was the hard limit on stock price history).

STF for the threads, but the prime destinations seem to be SEE Finance and MoneyDance. I went with the latter.

where are the forum threads discussing SEE Finance? a few threads mention it but that hardly makes it one of two 'Prime' destinations. i'm looking at the site now but i'd like others opinions on it and a forum search only produced mentions. i've seen iBank mentioned more than SEE Finance and i've been following these threads.

Gray,

I'll clarify. Lots of people have dumped Quicken in favor of several alternatives. MoneyDance seems to be mentioned the most but it is far from the only one. Lots are mentioned but I can't say which one is the alternative people are actually switching to at this point. Seems like a poll is in order. I use MoneyDance as a primary and am ready to switch to Fortora Fresh Finance in the event Moneydance has issues.

i got that. i'm looking to joining the stampede away when i have time to research. Raz's sentence implies that SEE Finance was receiving as much play as Moneydance and i was curious about that implication since i read these threads and that is the first time I've even heard about SEE. a forum search shows you have mentioned it but i can't find a real discussion of its pros/con here.

If you want to read lots of comments about Quicken for the Mac and alternatives, there have been long running discussions at Macintouch, SEE Finance has been mentioned there a number of times recently.

Here's the latest page, you can click on the Older Entries link to see more

The discussion seems to have started in 2006.

Graylocks,

There's a wealth of discussion over the past few months specifically on migration from Quicken over at Macintouch. Most of postings there indicate that SEE Finance and Money Dance are the best alternatives to Quicken at this point.

Click Older Entries for earlier discussion there.

I haven't migrated myself, but am leaning to SEE Finance as well.

Edit: Beaten by a minute ;-)

thanks bhaveshp and GGD. i'll check those threads out. i'm a creature of habit; this is the only board i read except when directed for specific info.

I'll bet that all of these alternative developers are loving this, although it might just be short term. I suspect that many of us (myself included) will actually buy a few of these products to do a very complete evaluation and run side-by-side with Quicken before committing for the long term.
