Cell phone options for college-bound son
#1
As you may recall, from my previous post, our eldest son will be attending college in the fall. We are addressing the tech/computer issues (thanks to everyone for the helpful input!), but we also need to address a phone issue. Up to this he has had a tracfone (a very basic flip phone) that he has used for infrequent or emergency calls. He will be needing something more "substantial" for when he is at college.

The phone would be used primarily for voice calls and only infrequent texting. He has expressed no interest in any form of a smart phone. He likes his current Moto flip phone which, due to its small size, he is able to carry in his pocket. Following the past recommendations of forum members I have been looking into the Page Plus 1200 plan, which would appear to meet his needs. It appears his current tracfone would not work on the Page Plus (Verizon) network, so a replacement will need to be found.

Is the Page Plus 1200 plan the best bang for the buck given my son's phone needs? What phone recommendations would you have (cost is a factor)? Please keep in mind his desire for a small flip phone that will easily fit in his pocket. Where is the least expensive place to purchase this phone? Am I correct that any Verizon phone should work?

I'll confess that I called the housing department of the university and did ask as to whether wired phone service (POTS) was still available in the dorm rooms. After a lengthy pause (covering laughter?) the young lady responded, "no sir, most of our students use cell phones!". Smile

Thanks for your input and advice!

"The phone would be used primarily for voice calls and only infrequent texting."

That's what you think now, but I can guarantee that the texting will be much heavier than you expect. Even if he doesn't send texts, he'll be receiving them from classmates who have unlimited text plans and use text as their first choice for communication vs voice. And when he does receive one, he'll feel obligated to reply via text.

I personally never text and think it's a step backwards in technology, more like using Morse Code, but three kids have gone through college and I've watched their text usage increase over time.

I think Page Plus as the best bang for the buck, if you don't need data for a smart phone You can get almost any Verizon phone to use. I would suggest eBay or Craigslist or a hand me down from a Verizon customer who upgraded and has an old flip phone, if that is what he wants, lying around.

The other prepaid carrier that has good plans is TMobile. They have inexpensive phones on their website.

I have the Page Plus 1200 plan, and my daughter in college has the TMobile $50 unlimited prepaid plan.

GGD,rgG-thanks for your advice and input. As I understand it if, at some point in the future, it should appear that he needs to move to the unlimited Page Plus plan that wouldn't be difficult to do. I will check into T-Mobile. I will have to check the T-Mobile coverage area. I know that Verizon would have coverage both at college (University of Oklahoma) and here in NW Iowa.

cbelt3-thank you for your very generous offer! I did send a return PM.

Thanks for all of the help!

Honestly, I don't even know if I'd bother with voice, if you had the choice. (Use Skype or something else). I don't particularly want to say that SMS is the future, but various forms of text messaging are.

Just a thought -- you may want to consider getting him on the same carrier as yourself, sometimes calls from mobile to mobile in the same carrier are free.

Then he can call home without costing anything.

FWIW, I'm on T-Mobile prepaid and happy with it. I put $100 on my account and it will last me a year plus. I just add $10 at the year and everything rollsover. So I get about 18 months for $110, obviously I don't use it much. However I do have a 1st Generation iPhone for it. I can't surf or do anything online with it but the apps that work offline are very handy.

microchip-thanks for the link to the article. Keep in mind I am the guy who asked about POTS! LOL!

Obligo-thanks for the suggestion. My wife and I have a tracfone for rare/emergency use only. Part of my dilemma is not knowing how much he will use the phone....

Thanks for the help!

Dave

Edit: speedy- LOL! Thanks for the input and chuckle!
