review of osx Lion

I couldn't agree with this review more. I deeply regret moving to Lion. They even went to some trouble to make the address book harder to use.

He's right about the Find/Replace in TextEdit. TextEdit in Lion is a useless designed-by-committee piece of cr@p.

And scrolling in Lion destroys several decades of usability enhancements in one go. The OS should not "bounce" items out of view in Finder windows. That's just wrong. When I scroll to the bottom of a list, my intention is usually to find the stuff at the bottom of the list. Not 2 items up.

And he's got a good point about having to launch iTunes and wade through it's terrible interface just to sync his phone. That complaint is old, but it's just as valid now as it was in 2007.

And it's annoying as all f-ck to have apps quit on you just because you left them running in the background for a few minutes.

Most of Lion's GUI changes are negatives IMHO. Stuff done with no consideration for utility/usability.

Working in Lion makes me feel like I'm trying to run a marathon while dragging a car behind me. No matter how snappy it is in other respects, the interface changes almost all universally slow down my workflow and that's unforgivable.

Add his crashing to the general frustration of using the horrible GUI and I'm a bit surprised that his post wasn't just a long string of curses.

I've been in no hurry to upgrade and after noting so many references to problems, I'm more reluctant than ever to give up on Snow Leopard.

It's the old "if it ain't broke, don't fix it!" concept that I'll stick with, for now.

btw, I'm posting this from my new Touchpad. Except for it's weight, I'm liking it a lot.

Nice to type on when it's cradled in the touchstone, but holding it resting on my arm… that's kind of torture for me.

Aside from the chaos that Lion has apparently delivered to many Mac people, I still saw no compelling reason to update. I am just fine on Snow Leopard and will remain there. Once you guys start raving about how Tim finally fixed it to run like it should have, I will take a look.

Maybe we need to shoot Tim a link to this forum? :priate:

Whataya bet that the new iPhone 5 (or whatever number it will be) is gonna require Lion as the OS version on the Mac computer...

I'm sure the vast majority of iPhone users use PC's. I'm also sure a large percentage of Mac Users' machines (like mine) won't even run Lion.

The seemingly arbitrary GUI changes in Lion remind me of when I first used Office with the new menus.

Journalistically speaking that wasn't a critical review, it was more a rant. And therefore pointless in helping the reader understand the changes.

To the author, the reasons for change (and therefore any potential benefits) are meaningless. Score 1 for raving at the moon about one's cheese being moved.

Nobody has to "like" Lion. I'll be the first to say it's far from perfect. But complaining without even understanding what it is you're seeing is downright embarrassing. And waiting for some forum consensus to "bless" the OS as fit for consumption is pathetic.

There are some Mac users on this forum that are effectively done with using OS X at this juncture and they haven't accepted that fate yet. Nothing wrong with that, and venting angst is natural. Just don't go looking for much sympathy from the rest of us who choose to stay current, not for the newness but for the benefits you'll have to wait for (Windows, I suppose) to employ. If it ever does.
