inverted shelving brackets?

I need something like an angle bracket but one that mounts on top rather than below the shelf. So the shelf kind of "hang's off the bracket. I found some online but they are giant ugly metal brackets you'd use in your garage. These need to be smallish. Probably no more than 5 inches tall. I can easily just get a normal pair and install them upside down, but I was hoping for something so it didn't LOOK like they were installed upside down.

that's why I want the shelf. But I have wainscoting underneath so no room to put brackets.

I'm not sure, but I suspect 'inverted' brackets need to be stronger (therefore bigger) to handle the load. Maybe someone who has more experience can chime in...

EDIT: On second thought, maybe not. Metal under tension (which is what an inverted bracket would be in) is more efficient than metal under compression (due to what engineers call 'crippling' loads).

I've inverted shelf brackets before... and they hold a moderate load pretty well. I wouldn't want to use them to "hang" a bookshelf that's going to be fully loaded, but for a speaker, yeah... I'd do that.

That was my thought. The speaker isn't too heavy. Plus I figure the back edge of the shelf would probably rest on the chair railing. So that would help it support the weight.

If you've got a chair rail under the shelf, then I'd definitely use a shelf bracket upside down. Almost exactly the situation I used it in (only it was a window casement, not a chair rail).

L brackets come in a whole bunch of sizes
the bigger ones will have an angle support that would get in the way


you should be able to find them with one side longer than the other, too

they are utilitarian, but if they are small enough you shouldn't see (much of ) them inverted.
