HELP iPhone 42 wont access internet
#1
OK, this is the weirdest thing.

My iphone 4s (5.1.1) all of a sudden (last 4 hours) will not access the internet. The phone works fine, and I still get email.

When I try to access the internet, I get this message

"Cannot Open Page
Safari cannot open the page.
The error was "There was a problem communicating with the web proxy server (HTTP)"

I've done a hard reset, reset the network settings and been on the phone with AT&T for over an hour, finally bumped up to the "iPhone specialist" who had me do a few things but basically said "these iphones do this all the time" and said I should do a complete reset and backup and if that doesn't work, take it to an Apple Store.

Any ideas??

HELP

Keep resetting the network settings. It will eventually take.

Have you tried restarting it?

Settings > WiFi > [Your Network] > Http Proxy > Off

Yes, restarted and a hard reset.

And http proxy is off, always was

And a question, my wifi works fine, its the 4g that doesn't, so why would I mess with the proxy settings in the wifi?

Have you installed Onavo or similar software to maximize your wireless data? If so, is Onavo running?

yes, it was running but I took it off

I think I found it, it was something to do with Onavo.

I tried deleting the app, but that didn't do it. If anyone else runs into the problem, here's how you remove Onavo

1. Go to your Settings app -> General -> Profiles
2. Locate the profile called "Onavo"
3. Tap Remove
4. Go back to your home screen and delete the Onavo Extend icon

Hope this helps someone. I'm not sure what the problem was, I was liking Onavo, but that was definitely the problem

Safari cannot open the page.
"There was a problem communicating with the web proxy server (HTTP)"

Safari communicates with web servers via http.

Other protocols (POP/SMTP for email) seem to work. Http does not work. And the error message specifically notes an http proxy error.

So the first place to check is your phone's http proxy setting.

...And you didn't indicate that the problem involved the 4G data setting.

...

If your other data connections work over 4G, but not the web then it's probably an issue with AT&T's local service.

I'd use the "Mark the Spot" app (which every AT&T iPhone user should have) to report the outage and sleep on it. They may have it fixed by morning.

(You can download Mark the Spot via WiFi or iTunes.)
