Firefox version?
#1
I've been having problems with a particular website that I sort of really need to access, so I started investigating. A year or so ago I decided to update Firefox and was so disappointed that I immediately reverted back to a previous version. Well, I've come to the conclusion it may have been a little more than "a year or so ago", since upon checking, I see that I'm using version 3.6.19. And according to the Mozilla/Firefox website, they're up to version.14!

What do you think? Am I going to regret trying an update again or will it be even noticeable? FYI, I'm still at Mac OS 10.6.8 and I have no desire to upgrade the OS for the time being. Am I going to see compatibility issues? What's likely to Break? Anything?

Thanks.

you could get 3.6.28

http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/10700/firefox

or if you want something newer but not bleeding edge, try Firefox ESR (Extended Support Release) which is 10.0.6, also on that page

i've heard some complaints of slowness, Adobe apps crashing, and other things since 14.0.1 was updated on their system

I think 3.6.28 (or .29?) was about as far a they pushed it (v3.6.x). Somewhere around 9.x/10.x/11.x FF started being OK again, after a few clunkers. There's a few good ones floating around, 11/12/13, so you should be safe taking a flyer at upgrading. Good luck.

Or just make a duplicate of Firefox in the Applications folder; rename the duplicate to reflect its version (Firefox_3.6.19).

You may also want to duplicate your personal Library/Mozillla folder and Library/Application Support/Firefox folder.

Run the original Firefox and do Firefox->About Firefox ... the popup dialog box should show the version number, and start checking for updates. If there is no automatic update, then go to https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/ and download the current Firefox (14.0.1) . Quit Firefox, and install the new (from the disk image to the Applications folder).

Run and enjoy. Extensions that are no longer compatible with 14.0.1 will be disabled (pending updates). You will have to update all plugins also.

The only issue for me is the newfangled 'smart' homepage (faint images of your most frequently visited web pages) -- it does not help me.
I prefer a blank page (loads faster, anyway).
To override the default 'smart' page, start Firefox, go to
about:config
look for browser.newtab.url and set its value to about:blank
also, for the next entry
browser.newtabpage.enabled , set its value to false

It's been quite good for me. YMMV.

^^This^^. No problems with 14 on this end. It may break some add-ons but I'll bet it does fine with your mysterious webpage.

I've been keeping up with the steady updates on my 3 macs and haven't had a problem.

Well, I let Firefox update itself to version 10 last night with no ramifications...thus far. Unfortunately, it still doesn't like that website. It claims I'm still logged into the site and for me to close all windows and tabs. I've even tried to log in there from a cold restart of the whole computer and I get the same message.

I just checked my iMac at work which is running Firefox 10.0.2 and the site is fine. Must be some weird thing on my computer.

Huh? Where is "about:config"?

You type that in the address bar as a URL.
