Does anybody have an optimal configuration for Apple Mail and Gmail?
#1
I'm trying to find an optimal setup of Gmail on Apple Mail where one can delete and archive messages.

Any links for a good setup?

Thanks.

I think you might describe "optimal" in a bit more detail. Perhaps which OS and a list of what you want to do with Gmail besides delete and archive.

I started trying to describe a possible solution for you, but stopped, as it really gets complicated, and I'm still not sure what you want to accomplish.

Thanks. I'm on Mountain Lion. I'm just trying to get Gmail in Mail to behave like Gmail on the web.

If you have a setup you like, I'm all ears!

What do you need to do that setting it up as an IMAP account doesn't get you?

When you delete something, it's deleted.
When you file something in a folder, it's filed...
Both in Mail and on the Gmail web interface.

Not real clear on what else you are looking for?

I'm not able to reproduce that behavior. When I delete something in Mail (trash can icon) it doesn't immediately go to the Trash on the web. It eventually does, but for some reason still has an "inbox" label attached to it.

When I archive something in Mail (file cabinet icon) it creates a new [Imap]/Archive label on the web instead of just putting it into All Mail.

Stuff like that.

This was a topic in a recent newsletter from smalldog.com. Not sure it addresses everything but may help:

Thanks for that link, though that deals specifically with Gmail on iOS. My issue is with Gmail on Mail in Mountain Lion.

No worries! It's always good to get reinforcement that I've set up Gmail on my iPhone properly.

Hmm... I don't know...
I haven't switched back and forth between the Mail interface and the Web interface fast enough to notice any "lag" as you describe.

In the accounts I have set up as IMAP, it just seems to work pretty transparently... (to my pleasant surprise compared to some distant-past IMAP experiences... ).
