First I want to thank everyone for helping me get ML installed on my second iMac. It was successful and I did make a copy, someday I will figure out how to make that b/u flash drive install.
Ok, on to my question, we were given an iPad II (girlfriend's dad passed and he gave it to his daughter).
Seems that a lot of the new apps want ios5.
I can not figure out how to upgrade to ios5 or even find out what version is on the iPad now.
Will we be stuck with the current verison forever?

If you go to Settings>General>About, you'll see the version of iOS installed, you'll also see a Software Update just under About.
If it were mine, I would restore to original specs and make it my own with my Apple ID. That can be done by connecting to iTunes, when it shows up you can restore. It will load the latest software and be clean and shiny like new.
If no computer, I think it can be done via iCloud, but I've never done that.
The iPad2 will run the next version of iOS, also.
Good luck.

If you decide to restore it and hook it up to your/girlfriend computer, all apps installed will no longer be installed and you will not be able to get them back on the iPad. The only way you will be able to get apps back is if you have the apple id and password that was used on the iPad when the apps were installed.

Thanks for the all the advice.
Since this iPad was purchased from the a local Apple Store it was never hooked up to a Mac (or a computer), duh!
I connected it to my iMac and iTunes was ready to update the ios.
Now that her father has passed away, how can I transfer his apple id to my apple id so we can keep all the apps?
Must be a way to modify his apple id.
Will investigate that next...... after the new download of the ios.
