All the ones on amazon get terrible reviews. Are there any decent ones for less than apple's super high premium price? Thanks.

The problem is that most of the generic versions out there are from one or two suppliers in china/hong kong. If you get a working generic version that last for more than a month, consider yourself lucky.
Came across this dilema after purchasing my iPhone 5. Looking for generics on ebay and Amazon. Out of the three that I purchases from ebay and Amazon. Two of them fit well and the third fit tight on the connector. Two of the three came apart within a week and luckly the sellers replaced them, after two of the three came apart again, I superglued the head. I am currently using a 6ft black version of monoprice's USB to 8pin adapter. These have held up pretty well and have the same tip as the original apple cable( most of the generics have a seam).

At best, the generic ones are only good for charging. They don't pass audio and sync is right out.
They also have a 50% failure rate when new and the ones that I got had burrs that had to be polished off before they'd fit in the phone.

As I recall, it took the chinese clone army about three years before reliable 30 pin cables started appearing. Before that they were cheap crap. Expect the same. Apple is very careful with their proprietary connectors.

From one of the reviewers:
"The product is not an original apple product, but looks exactly the same and functions exactly the same, minus 10 bucks or so. I am very happy with quality."

Lightning cables have a special chip in the connector that talks to the device to manage proper power as well as provide/enable other functions. Each authorized brand gets it's own identifier from Apple. By identifier, functions are even limited to what the 3rd party has products approved for... and fakes can be disabled.
Bottom line - buying anything other than an approved cable (in addition to discounted Apple lightning cables in stock, we also now have them from Griffin and MacAlly - will have NewerTech soon as well) is asking for trouble. These cables aren't the cheapest - but a lot less costly than paying good money for a cable that isn't going to work right. === Edit - I haven't seen anyone other than Apple with the adapter cable... and i believe Apple only reluctantly made that available.
