US beef prices set new high as spring barbecue season heats up
Fri, May 3 2013
By Theopolis Waters

CHICAGO May 3 (Reuters) - U.S. wholesale beef prices rose to an all-time high on Friday as the delayed spring grilling season is heating up and as supermarkets buy meat for the May 27 U.S. Memorial Day holiday weekend, commonly seen as the unofficial start of the summer cookout season, analysts said.

The cold soggy start to spring put outdoor cookouts on hold throughout most of April, but temperatures are seen climbing in the coming weeks, prompting grocers to stock up for a seasonal bump in sales of steaks, burgers and other cookout favorites.
--
The U.S. Department of Agriculture on Friday reported the wholesale price for choice beef, commonly called the cutout, at $201.68 per 100 lbs (cwt), eclipsing the previous record of $201.18 set on Oct 16, 2003.
--
Record-high wholesale beef prices could increase even more the lofty beef prices at grocery stores, analysts said.
--
The average retail beef price in March hit a record $5.30 per lb, surpassing the previous record of $5.15 in November, according to the government's Economic Research Service.
----
A prolonged dry spell in the U.S. southwest, which followed a historic drought in the Plains, damaged pastures. The lack of moisture drove up feed costs and shrunk the herd to its smallest in 61 years.

If you take chili powder, a little brown sugar, pepper, paprika, onion powder and garlic powder and stir it up into a dry rub, and apply that dry rub to a pork chop, let it sit for a half hour or so and grill it, it's delicious served with a sweet potato and green veg on the side. Right now I am doing asparagus, but spinach or mixed greens is just as good. You can swab the chop with a little barbecue sauce for the last couple of minutes of grilling. I make a quick sauce of chili sauce, mustard, vinegar and honey or brown sugar, whatever's handy.

Wayyyyyyy cheaper than a steak, and really good.

I recently payed about $10 Per/ Kilo for frozen T-Bone and Porterhouse Steaks from Montana
at a Costco type warehouse store here in the Philippines. They were very nice, marbly and delicious.
Much cheaper than hookers and boooozze *(:>*

$5.98 a pound for nice T-bones at our local supermarket on sale the last couple of weeks. I stocked up. Not long ago they had even better rib-eyes for the same price.

There is also a nearby deli that cuts meat to order you may have seen one of their
Porterhouses here before.

It's not coming from the farmers end. Wife and our neighbor sold some 300-500 lb. calves 2 weeks ago
and they were bringing $1.10-1.41/lb. on the hoof, that's down from 3-4 months ago. Wife sold hers
at a market near the farm and the neighbor had his hauled about 75 miles away thinking he'd get more
money but didn't.
