Next weekend, my wife is due to fly out west for her annual, week-long, girls spa trip. Unfortunately, her grandmother was admitted to the hospital a few days ago and may not be doing so well. I'm looking to pick up travel insurance to cover my wife's spa trip cost, just in case she needs to get to Ohio quickly instead of going to Arizona.
I have no experience on buying travel insurance. I'm going to look on Clark Howard's website and some travel sites, but thought I'd throw out the question here as well.

It's going to be expensive (if available at all) with that little notice. Better to buy it long before the travel date.
insuremytrip.com is good for comparison rates. Clark recommends it.

Thanks, Will. That is just what I'm looking for. The plans are from $130 to around $300. Not too bad, considering it is a week out and the cost of her trip is about $4K.
Her grandmother just got sick this week, so it's not something we could have planned for. Her doctor overmedicated her to the point of her needing hospitalization. And, what would have been an overnight stay at a decent hospital with a decent doctor has turned into a 5 night stay so far. My sister-in-law is on her way up there to triage the situation and report back. We've never been pleased with the medical care in rural NW Ohio, to say the least.

Yeah, I've had similar issues with family members in the last few years. Best of luck.

There is a guy named Tom Parson who is a travel "expert." He has radio shows and newspaper columns. My dialup is not loading anything on him, but he should be easy to find. He probably has a forum you can ask on.

I use TravelGuard regularly. Had a problem out of the country once and they covered the cost of hospital and flew me back to the US. Now, I don't leave home without it!

I've started buying travel insurance. It's generally inexpensive and family trips are high dollar items. I like to cover my bases.
