...assign ringtones to Groups? I've been googling for quite a while and consensus is that it can't, but I find that hard to believe. All the results I'm getting are dated more than a year ago, so I'm hoping it's just a matter of not searching properly. I'm pretty sure my old flip phone could even handle something like that.
Here's what I'm trying to do. I'd like to select numbers from my "Recents" call log and create a Group named Spam, put those numbers in that Group, then assign a silent ringtone to them. Seems as though it should be simple enough, but I'm finding a lot of "can't be done" hits in my searches.
Could it be that it really can’t be done? I don't want to jailbreak the phone.

You should be able to assign each one of those numbers the same ring tone, but I guess you would have to do it manually, one by one.

Make your default ringtone a silent one and assign everyone else a ringtone. Thats what I did. FYI I dont take many calls.

I just keep assigning those numbers to a single address book entry. No need for a group (but maybe it's easier to do it all at once if it's a group?).

One of my friends did something like that Gareth and its contact info name is "Do Not Answer"
You might also want to register your phone with the do not call registry. I think it needs to be done yearly.

Thanks, Rhonda. I was hoping I could avoid that. However, it looks like I'm not limited to number of numbers per contact. So I think I could just make a Spam contact instead of a Spam group, and then assign the ringtone to the contact.
Carm, the problem with your scenario is that I occasionally get calls from potential new clients. I'd definitely want to answer them. But 99.9% of the spam calls I get are from outside my area code, so I ignore them, look up the number, learn that it's a telemarketer, and I'd like to assign that silent tone.
-edit-
Looks like Gareth was posting while I was writing. That may be the answer. And as nearly everyone has discovered, the Do Not Call Registry is pretty much useless. I've been on there since it started. Robocallers don't abide by it, that's for sure.
--edit 2--
Wish I had asked this question months ago. It worked. I now have a contact named Spam, with about 20 numbers (so far), to which has been assigned a silent ringtone and no vibration. Thanks!

i have a question for those who get lots of unwanted calls on your iPhones:
do you use your mobile number instead of a land line when you create accounts? do you give it out to lots of businesses?
i ask because i don't give mine out lightly, and almost never get unwanted calls - only wrong numbers, never telemarketers or political surveys.
i still keep a land line active at home, with a caller id box and answering machine on it that screens the majority of our calls.

Google Voice. No one gets my actual cell number unless its family or a very close friend.
Everyone else: GV. I was lucky enough to get on GV early, my GV number has the same last 4 digits as my cell number, so I only have a few to remember =)

Same here, but I do get an occasional spam call.
Usually a robo call, sometimes a wrong number.
If I have to give my cellphone number out for business, I'll try to wean the caller from it, or it's a one-time thing.

I do not give out my cell number (most of the time I don't recall it since I don't use it much). Lately I have been getting many more spam calls, so it got out somehow. Most of the time if I get a call outside my area code, I ignore it.
