Driving my son to school the last couple of days (Missed da bus... :banghead: ) I've noted a little town along the interstate that has speed traps set up during peak rush hour.
I've always found that to be a really BAD idea... heavy flowing traffic and people suddenly slam on their brakes because they see a cop. Gotta be creating more accidents than it 'calms' traffic. In fact I saw one accident just before a speed trap location, possibly caused by that factor.
Experience and Opinions ?

There's little opportunity to speed at rush hour due to heavy volume.

Yep. Lots of them this week (end of the month, have to make quota) around the Chattahoochie River bridge on I-75 (Atlanta).

Local police on your Interstate? here that would get them escorted away as being outside their jurisdiction. Only the MA State Police can operate on the Interstate roads doing traffic enforcement.
Of course on local roads more than a few speed traps get set up by town cops at various times. Even get to see our university cops setting up a few speed traps when I drive in to work each day.

yes, that is correct, but his point is that it makes a bad situation (heavy traffic) all that much worse because everyone slows way down when they see flashing lights (and they're supposed to, it's just another thing to add to the delay in rush hour).

Matt,
You nailed it. Not an issue if (a) you're not speeding, (b) you're not following too closely © if you're paying proper attention to the road, etc.
