Do you want or need an optical drive, would you like the SD slot on the side where it is easily accessible? Is the lack of Thunderbolt and USB3 a factor? Do you want a faster processor architecture?

Do you want an iMac you can open yourself if necessary?

Depends on usage. You can add USB3 via a thunderbolt to usb3 cable or box down the road.
The i7 processor is a nice upgrade, and that model has the optical drive and can be opened up.
I'm not a big fan of the latest iMacs. 27" matte screen monitors are $500-600; add a Mac mini and you have an even better setup IMHO except for games or GPU-intensive programs.

I have a brand new Seagate Backup Plus unopened and ready for the new purchase.
This is, as most know a 4TB external HD with USB 3 so I have that covered.
I prefer the idea of adding my own memory and not paying Apple a premium for memory.
I am currently using my late 2009 3.06GHz Intel C2D iMac/Memory 12GB.
It has been a good computer and used constantly. I will keep
it as a back up and second unit elsewhere in our apartment.
I often watch some sporting events on the computer so I am ready for
more real estate. We will see whats available in a couple weeks from
the Apple Refurb store.
Thanks a lot for your suggestions and advice. I am still leaning towards the 2011 iMac.

Rudie, that usb3 drive will work fine as a usb2 backup drive of course.
I do admit that the new iMacs look thin and are impressive if you don't need to add any peripherals.
