How Difficult to Collect on Surge Suppressors/UPS' Warranties?

I'm curious as to how difficult it is to collect from companies such as APC, Belkin, Tripp Lite (among many others) when your electronic equipment is fried despite using their surge suppressors or UPSes? Can anyone care to relate?

IIRC, the fine print on APC was they will pay XX amount, only after you have made a claim on your homeowners/business policy, so the warranty is just supplemental insurance, paying the amount NOT covered by your policy (after deductible)
