Yes, it's like free root canal, but wouldn't root canal be less painful if you weren't billed for it? I stole this deal from Fatwallet, and just did it myself. It worked. I'll never be billed again (previously $7/month so my wife could keep her 14 year old screen name goiing).

Select Cancellation Department
Tell them that you access AOL via your Broadband provider and heard that AOL is offering free access provided that you utilize your broadband connection (non-AOL).
If they give it to you, they'll read off a bunch of terms and conditions.
New plan is effective immediately.

They tried to sign me up for various pay services, and I said, look let's just pretend I'm going to cancel the account and go through those motions. Bingo.
Pay for dial-up, and a $5 surcharge if you use premium services (I don't even know what those are).
