Big losers in shut-down? Indian tribes (natch)
#1
GOP will be passing special funding for Columbus Day celebrations, however...

Essential activities such as law enforcement, firefighting and some social services will continue, said Bureau of Indian Affairs spokeswoman Nedra Darling. Programs that did not make the list include residential care for children and adults, cash assistance for the poor and payments to vendors who provide foster care.

How long those programs will continue on reservations depends on the duration of the shutdown and how much money individual tribes can spare. The BIA provides services to more than 1.7 million American Indians and Alaska Natives from more than 500 recognized tribes.

Government shutdown:
What's closed, what's open?

updated 6:00 PM EDT, Tue Oct 1, 2013

With the federal government now shut down, many government services and agencies are closed, suspended or otherwise impacted. Below is a list of offices and agencies that are affected until congressional leaders and the president reach an agreement on a continuing resolution to reopen the government, along with the potential number of employees affected. This list represents the latest guidance provided to CNN by federal agencies. Some of the numbers could change as agencies identify ways to divert funding from other projects to keep their workers employed.
