Looking for new speakers for iMac - is Klipsch promdeia still good stuff?
#1
I see that Klipsch is still making the 2.1 promedia setup, but is available exclusively from bestbuy - (red flags bolt toward the sky!)

Is it still any good? I see an awful lot of promedia spare parts on sale at ebay. Meaning that either it's so popular that there are a lot of parts around OR they are so cheaply made that they break down and the rest gets parted out - or both...

anyway... I have an older sony receiver that I'm using with my computer - it was cheap on CL when my Klipsch GMX set died and has optical output.

I can't find my optical adapter for the imac, so I'm using analog. Doesn't sound as good, but I REALLY like having the keyboard audio controls.

Now... years ago, I used to use my mac for movie watching. having 5.1 was pretty nice, but I don't use the mac to movie watching anymore. I like the audio quality of optical cable, but should I bother going optical/digital just for my itunes (that is most mp3s)?

what do y'all recommend?

i bought those for my son to use at college and though i have always love my Soundsticks, i was jealous. he loves his Klipschs and unfortunately became the jerk in the dorm who got numerous noise complaints for playing his music too loud. if my soundsticks died i would by the pro media in a heartbeat. and i did get them on sale from BB.

I bought a pair about 5 years ago that were amazing (2.1s)-- they're in my bedroom and I still startle at times thinking something on the speakers is outside my window (especially during Walking Dead...)
I bought another for my main workstation maybe 3 years ago, and they definitely didn't sound as good. but IMO well worth the $150 still.
Can't speak to whether there have been any further reductions in quality in the meantime, but I do believe that they're "not as good as they were."

Are these the ones that Klipsch changed without changing the model number?

I have the 4.1 set and they're not bad, but there's nothing about them I really like. And mine are the ones before they changed.

The Klipsch name has little to do with the original Klipsch reputation.

I can't say enough about my JBL Creature II's. I believe they're up to Creature III's by now but they have great sound whether running off my iMac or my iPod.

I just did some research on this topic for my wife who was looking for speakers. She was looking for powered speakers and this is the email that I sent her.

If you are going to live with them for awhile you should get decent speakers. Here are the most popular ones I saw.

Klipsch ProMedia 2.1, $225
http://www.amazon.com/Klipsch-ProMedia-C..._1?ie=UTF8&qid=1380776299&sr=8-1&keywords=Klipsch+2.1
These seemed to be the runaway favorite. Only downside is you have to put a sub under your desk.

Audioengine A2 Premium Powered Desktop Speakers, $200
http://www.amazon.com/Audioengine-Premiu..._2?ie=UTF8&qid=1380776492&sr=8-2&keywords=Audioengine+A2
These appear to be the audiophile choice. They sound good on their own and if you add a subwoofer later they are considered great. I'm sure just the speakers would be fine in your situation.

If you want to cheap out there are two other options. They don't register on the audiophile meter but they are cheap and well rated on amazon.

Creative GigaWorks T40 Series II 2.0, $120
http://www.amazon.com/Creative-GigaWorks...r_1_7?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1380777077&sr=1-7&keywords=computer+speakers

Bose Companion 2 Series III, $100
http://www.amazon.com/Bose-Companion-III...r_1_1?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1380777077&sr=1-1&keywords=computer+speakers

Consider that the Bose we travel with cost $300 and that might help you decide how much to spend.

wow - amazon suckers!

MSRP is $149.95 on the Promedia 2.1, $139.95 at BB, the lone authorized dealer....

The price at amazon has come down to 189 but that is still quite a contrast with best buy.

That's not amazon, it's sucker hunters (Milas Corp.) using amazon marketplace...

I have a Bose sound link that I'm very pleased with. It can move from room to room and play via Bluetooth.
