My wife's Grand Caravan has about 35,000 miles on it and her tires need to be replaced (5 year tires, lots of life on the tread but due to dry rot I need to replace). A good friend of mine sent me to a friend of his's tire/wheel shop. Has good pricing but recommended a used tire set with 90% tread left (look brand new) for about $250 installed. I'm just wondering if I want to go "used". Any recommendations? I hate to buy too good of a tire seeing she doesn't get the mileage out of her vehicle.

IF the tires are good tires (not bottom of the rung, etc) models, then YES that's a very good deal.
So, I'd at least ask what tires they are and verify correct size.

First question is how long are you going to hang onto the vehicle and what is the price difference between the $250 and a new set?
Unless you're talking high line, you're only going to save $50-$75, so why even bother?

Nothing wrong with 90% tread used if you'll probably never wear out the tread before replacement. The other option is a cheap new tire with a lesser tread life, but sometimes the cheapest tires don't have the better traction, if that's important.
I never get the listed miles out of my tires. I just go for the absolute cheapest tire with "A" mud and snow traction.

Price, used vs new? Warranty on the used tires?

So, How old are the used tires you are looking at. Will they last or go bad in another year?

There are many places in life to save money, but tires on my wife's car are not one I would ever consider. Given the serious consequences of a flat or blowout (which I experienced as a young man driving on cheap tires) I have always bought Michelin's for any car in our family and sleep soundly knowing I have taken care of my responsibilities. Saving a few bucks on tires could conceivably turn out to be one of the worst decisions of your life if something goes wrong. Our highways are dangerous enough without tossing questionable tires into the mix.
