Glad I kept a copy of the old Pages app
#1
Went to the Apple boards and there is a lot of moaning. I did the update and checked it out. As someone over there said, it looks like they are turning the Mac into a big iPad. I guess in order to make it compatible across Mac OS and iOS they really dumbed it down. There are several pages of changes, missing features from previous, and bugs listed.

For me, I added to their discussion:
I also discovered that it appears layouts are no longer broken doen into Word Prcessor and Layout. There is one document type and when I clicked on show rulers there is now only a horizontal ruler at the top and no verticle ruler. Going to make it tougher for layout work. (Unless I missed something)

Because of the single document type, I think that's why there are fewer templates and why some of mine are gone. I reinstalled the '09 version. I can run them simultaneously and hope Apple fixes it.

I have simple layout needs (non-pro), and started using this once AppleWorks got the kibosh.
I have never looked back...

I guess Apple won't have to worry about taking away marketshare from Microsoft.

Have any of the other iWorks programs been dumbed down? Numbers? Keynote?

That is a sad commentary on Apple's move away from helping people produce content towards helping people consume it. One of Mac's strengths in the early days was that you could MAKE stuff. Now it's look and listen. There's still the Mac Pro side, but I havea feeling that will go the way of the Cube, cool though it is. The Macbook and iMac side have more time, but their time is limited too, methinks.

if you MAKE stuff, you're not BUYING stuff -- amirite, Apple?

The update automatically keeps a copy of the old version in a folder in your Applications folder.

I have an old copy of iWorks somewhere.

It's probably not current for its version (if that makes any sense) so I probably won't upgrade it.

Maybe this will be like the-- Final Cut Pro (?) situation. Wasn't that something like Great, Dumbed, now it's Back?

I understand Apple's desire to make this simple for 90% of the 90%, but why not an iWorks and iWorks Pro? Or maybe something like the Simple Finder? One interface for lightweights, another for power users?

Apple's trying to simply the transition via the halo affect, I guess. But they don't *have* to take away features. Use the Option key to toggle interfaces and features.

Seriously, I wish somebody would make an open source twin of AppleWorks that runs in current OSs. I'd like something with a little more panaché than TextEdit.

I'll have to dig through the trunk and see if I still have a copy of iWorks.
