Best inkjet all-in-one for parents (ages 87 and 80?)
#1
My mom and dad need a new inkjet printer all in one (print, copy, fax, scan).

From what I can tell through research, the main issues is cost per page. Apparently, a lot of the inkjets can waste 20% or more of the ink by going through routine cleaning cycles or calibration cycles, etc. Also, some of them won't let you print in black, even though you have plenty of black ink, if any of your color cartridges have run out. I'd prefer to avoid those issues, if possible.

There's a lot of good press out there for the HP Officejet Pro 8600, and the Epson Workforce WF-2530, but they both seem to be subject to the two problems above.

Can anyone recommend an inkjet all-in-one, based on your current personal experience (i.e., a model I can just go out and buy--so "I had an Epson 8 years ago and it was great" is appreciated, but won't help much).

Thanks!

is laser an option?

Laser could be an option, if there's a model under $200.

Anon,

One key question is how often do they print hardcopies? Any inkjet could prove problematic if they don't print much. How about printing over a network? Again, a question to ask before making the purchase. Price range? I saw some amazing deals on the Officejet Pro 8600 recently but there are likely deals on other models as well both inkjet and laser.

Many models for well under 200, look for brother models for example. That is for BW though, avoid color laser as those use expensive toner

HP inks are crazy expensive (IMO) and, many of the HP cartridges are "chipped" to block the use of refilled cartridges. I've been very happy with my Brother J-825DW AIO. Refilled cartridges work fine and are very reasonably priced on Amazon. It also uses a four cartridge system so, I can replace only the color that runs low. It offers a sheet feeder, duplexing, color & B&W scanning and faxing, WiFi, ethernet & USB2 connectivity. I believe the J-825DW has been superseded by the J-835DW.

I have two friends who are seniors and, each has been using an older Brother AIO for several years now (I set each up with the same model, MFC-240C). Those printers have been (and still are) champs! Brother also seems good about supporting Mac OSes.

It's been years since I've used Epson. Epson's print quality was great but, if the printer didn't see daily use, the print head would clog. Cleaning cycles often did not get the clogged cartridge back to reliable operation.

Those are identical, 835 has a different pattern on the top cover, and it was sold only at Best Buy so that best buy didn't have to price match Staples, Offide Depot and other retailers.

Now replaced by the 875

Test,

That very much depends on the model and whether or not your comparing prices of OEM ink to after market ink. Many HP inkjets have a cost per page comparable to laser printers. That said, when it comes to cost per page in the case of Anon's parents, you have to look at the following:

How much and how often are they actually going to print stuff? If they're like my parents, they don't print all that much in comparison to say, a family with kids. So, cost per page may be a non-issue. One set of cartridges in an inkjet printer or one laser toner cartridge - even introductory cartridges will last them a significant length of time.

Bear in mind, the cost for OEM and aftermarket ink and toner can vary greatly from store to store and day to day.

FWIW, the Officejet Pro 8600 will allow you to print in black and white only even when the color ink cartridges require replacement. Same goes for its non-all-in-one sibling the Officejet Pro 8100.
