Canon Pixma MG5320 direct-to-CD printing blacks blurry, all other printing is fine. What's going on?
#1
Just picked up one of these printers primarily for direct CD printing. I have a B&W laser for proofing (hah!), but nothing that prints discs. So....that's what I'm trying to get working.

I've setup a file to print in Indesign, exported a high-res PDF and am printing from Preview. I've got all the right (I think) options selected in the print dialog box (no scaling, disc as print media, etc), and discs are successfully printed, though they come out with a sort of ghosted/doubled look on nearly all text. It's like there's a first pass of the printing head, and then it goes for a second pass and is slightly off for the second pass.

The interesting thing is that if I print the exact same file onto a sheet of paper, it comes out as crisp as I'd expect. I have tried printing to different types and brands of inkjet printable CDs (standard, and then also some of the water shield discs)...all the same result.

I just tried something else that might give a clue as to what's going on....changed a block of text to a dark deep red from the original black. And wouldn't you know it, that text prints perfectly sharp. Black text on the same disc still is doubled.

I've cleaned the print heads, run the alignment utility several times, etc. The printer seems to be fine, other than this one thing. I need to get some discs printed by tomorrow, and if it comes to it, I'll make the black text something that's a slightly different color and just be done with it. But if I'm going to keep this printer, it needs to work reliably for my needs.

Any ideas of things I should try before pitching it out of the window?

I should also say that I tried printing a test disc using Canon's "Easy-PhotoPrint EX" software with the same results, so I don't necessarily think it's a software issue.

couple other things I tried:

-converting text to outlines (no change)
-updating printer firmware (no change)

For today's need, I just changed the black text to dark blue text, and the client will be fine with that. For the long term, this doesn't seem like a workable solution to my need. So, I'll probably need to look at one of the pro models (Bravo brand) of CD printers. Was hoping to save a little money, but with the hours I've put into troubleshooting this one, I would have probably been better off with a pro model to begin with. Oh well. Lesson learned.

How about creating a PDF with just the text from the Indesign and printing that to see if the text is clear.

what do you mean, exactly? I'm already creating a PDF from Indesign and attempting to print that in Preview.

I guess I was envisioning that the final design was a combination of graphics, maybe a photo or drawing, and text. Then maybe the PDF was being rendered in such a manner that the text was doubled. I might be having flashbacks from the days of Postscript and PCL printer driver issues.

Have you tried printing out of Adobe Reader? Perhaps the PDF has become slightly less portable.

Yeah, tried printing from Reader as well. Same results. The design in this case is 99.9% text, with a simple thin line in one location.

Is the whole layout in black? Maybe selecting grayscale printing could be a work-around?

Here is an old thread dealing with grayscale printing.

Did you try to call Canon tech support?

I tried selecting grayscale in the Preview print dialog, and it gave me the same results. Actually, a part of the text was originally supposed to be in color, so I didn't want to go that route unless absolutely necessary.
