I have decided to buy a D90 at the KEH website. My brother in law is a painter and wishes to branch out into photography.
He will be doing mostly interiors and portraits but as Ecuador is teaming with flora and fauna, he will be doing some outdoor photography.
Do you think he will need a couple of lenses or is one really good one the way to go?
Any advice/recommendations are appreciated.
Also, any other accessories that are must have, like a tripod.
Traveling there in August so I have plenty of time.
Thanks.

Get a Sigma or Tamron 18-250 OS/VC. Either lens is a lot of value for the price.
I would only question the purchase of a D90...why such an old camera? I think any of the more recent cameras will provide better dynamic range. An old D300 is probably better than the D90 in terms of image quality, better low light performance, and faster autofocus. My 2 cents worth...

Tamron 18-270 Di II is a decent all around/ walking around lens.
edit: ( don't buy into the 18-55, 55-300 trap, it is a PITA at least for tourista use)
D90 I assume is a budget purchase, which is certainly a step up from a D80 ( which is still a decent camera )
be careful if looking at nikon 18-135 as they have been problem fraught ( although mine has been and is still fine, plastic mount not-withstanding )
I like my nikon 10-24 3.5-4.5 despite some unkindly reviews for interiors and outdoor shots being real careful
+1 on going outdoors/indoors in the tropics, condensation is not kind

For a great low light camera, DX format, budget permitting, take a look at D6100....

Don't mean to complicate things, but micro 4/3 might be an option vs. DX.

me neither, but I have seen some great bundle deals on dealnews over the last few months, like this:
Canon 70D with 18-55mm Lens, Canon EF 55-250mm Telephoto Zoom Lens, 32GB Flash Card, Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 Telephoto Lens, 1400mAh Li-lon Battery

I have no idea how it compares to a D90 or your budget
