annual physical fri-what do i need to ask/find out?
#1
i'll be 60 yrs young at the end of july.

on friday, i have my annual physical.

i'm wondering what i REALLY need to ask/find out?

thankfully, i'm in pretty good health.

i exercise 3x/week, and have for most of the past 30 years, give or take a month or two off.

in the past 3 years, i have lost approx 30lbs and went from 215lbs to 185lbs, from a 36-38 jeans to a 32-34 jeans.

according to my scale, my daily bmi hovers at 18.5-19.

i had a colonoscopy 3 yrs ago and all was fine.

i never smoked tobacco, i probably have one glass of wine/beer/per week.

i eat beef/fish/chicken 3x week, the rest is veggies/salad/yogart-i eat lots of plain fage yogurt.

i take no medication.

my maternal grandfather was diabetic. my mom is not.

so i put it out there, what should i ask/find out?

thanks in advance to those who care to share.

be well.

sounds like you are doing everything right. Any family health issues that might have been passed on to you?

Basic blood work. Also keep on top of your eye exams. They can find indicators of health issues as part of a comprehensive exam.

You are a cancer survivor, right?

Ask not what your colon can do for you, ask what you can do for your colon.

Oatmeal is a good start.

Not much. I imagine the doc will check your cholesterol.

Bonus: if you doc is female, ask for a very thorough check of your prostate. Also, mention that you think you think you may have a hernia. When you cough during the check, tell her it hurts a bit and request a recheck. My doc (male) can do a prostate check in two seconds. I asked him how he could do it so quickly and he said, "Experience!" He said that when he did his first check while in medical school it took quite a bit of time and he felt sorry for the student being checked. The hernia check was also one cough and, "Yes, you have a hernia. If it doesn't bother you, don't worry about it."

ask about the shingles vaccine though you'll probably have to wait until your birthday for it as many insurers won't pay under 60.

I was going to suggest the shingles vaccine, too. But it is a good time to go through your vaccination list. Check for Hep B and C. Whens the last time you had a DPT/DPwT vaccine? Pertussis (whooping cough) is on the rise. How about pneumonia vaccine? When did you have your last EKG/ECG? Should you be taking any supplements? I take aspirin and Vit D, both recommended by doctors.
