e-commerce situation

So my mom, who works for a non-profit arts gallery, wants/needs to put up an e-commerce store. They will essentially be displaying the artist's work with the artist supplying the shipping and copy and pics etc.

Right now they have a wordpress site that my mom (and me to some extent) supports. So she/we are looking for an e-commerce solution that is either cheap or preferably free. That is easy to use. And can integrate into wordpress.

I do not even know if such an animal exits. The ones I've had experience with a overly complex OR have little or no "design" latitude AND good luck integrating with your own site. But it's been a while so things may have gotten better. I don't know. That's why I'm turning to you good people.

I am currently using Jigoshop on one of my sites. As they say in the drug world...the first one is free. The product itself is free, but most of the compatible themes and the extensions to make it work for you are not free. WooCommerce is similar in this regard.

One issue that I have in particular with Jigoshop is that it started off in essentially beta mode when we started using it about 2 years ago. It has since gone through about 12 significant updates. Keeping up to date so that all of the pieces keep working together is a chore. We try to do these updates in our off season, so we often have to roll through several updates sequentially, upgrading the database each time. We have learned you cannot skip a version or all hell breaks loose.

If I did it again, I probably would go with WooCommerce as it seems a bit more mature.

The BIG issue is handling payments. And if you're not compliant with the various security rules, you will have a problem. And that usually means compliant from start to end.

Outsourcing the whole thing is often the best solution.

The last WP theme I purchased came with WooCommerce integration right into the WP dashboard... Works well for the client so far.
