Feds creating hate speech database?
#1
http://freebeacon.com/issues/feds-creati...n-twitter/

The federal government is spending nearly $1 million to create an online database that will track “misinformation” and hate speech on Twitter.

The National Science Foundation is financing the creation of a web service that will monitor “suspicious memes” and what it considers “false and misleading ideas,” with a major focus on political activity online.

The “Truthy” database, created by researchers at Indiana University, is designed to “detect political smears, astroturfing, misinformation, and other social pollution.”

Good that Obama's speeches will have a home.

Ohio's stupid law against 'lying in political campaigns' has produced an unintended consequence of the law being used as a 'blocking' system.

Candidate A spends much $$ producing an ad that says "X".
As soon as the ad appears, Candidate B sues saying "X" is a lie.
The expensive ad is now blocked until the suit can be heard. Court schedules being what they are, this must wait until after the election. Before the suit can be heard, Candidate B drops the suit.

Wash, rinse, repeat.

BTW... this 'database' is obviously being put together with some grant money. The federal government can't spend JUST $1M on anything that it does. Not a big deal, whatever, YMMV, nothing to see here, go back to your breakfasts, Mr. and Ms. America.

Interesting project. Politically neutral, will reveal false rumors started by both parties. Why are conservatives so afraid of this?

Oh my God! We're doing research on the function of misinformation in social media! The only way to protect freedom is to remain as ignorant as possible on matters of social science!

"NSF surveys of public attitudes and knowledge have consistently shown that the public has a positive view of science but has little scientific understanding. The greatest deficit remains the public's understanding of the scientific method."

Yup. They got that part right.

Thanks for the link, LD. It does seem interesting. I wonder how long until the social polluters learn to game the system.

To train our algorithms, we leverage crowdsourcing: we rely on users like you to flag injections of forged grass-roots activity. Therefore, click on the Truthy button when you see a suspicious meme!
