Coworkers are at it again. I don't argue these things any more; I just say buy whatever you want.
However, what do you guys say about this dealnews item?

Right now, I have to use the Mac OS - I'm willing to pay a substantial premium to do this... in 10 years, I can't imagine that this will still be true.

I'd take that $675 and use it as a payment toward a Mac. Add about $300 more and get a great refurb. My money won't go for Windows stuff. Life's too short, time's too valuable, don't need nary more stress.

Total cost of ownership . How long does the hardware last ? How long will it work effectively ? How much will you pay for anti malware protection ? Software licenses ? Etc ....

Do the math , and Mac wins every time.

No? While I choose not to use Windows on my personal computers, I also take note of my Mac using friends, family, and clients needing at least the same amount of support as those using Windows. Fairly recently, a client balked at the budget I set for a Mac to replace her old computer, so she settled on a nicely specced Lenovo AIO with three years on site coverage for at least $300 less than a comparably specced new Mac mini with peripherals and AppleCare.

How much did it cost to replace her Mac software? All you mentioned was the price of the Lenovo.

What Mac software? She had an older computer running XP Home SP3 and wanted a new computer. Either way, we spent zero dollars on software. She uses WordPad for basic letters, browses the web and checks email via a web browser, and prints things occasionally. Wait, also uses a PDF reader on occasion. A Mac could have done the same, but would have cost more and had an inferior warranty. Good luck getting Apple on site for desktop support.

Many of the XPS 8XXX series make great Hackintosh machines. Just saying.

Well, that is not what you implied in your first post. Everything else mentioned Mac before saying she settled on the Lenovo.

I've spent way too much time fixing virus issues with my son's PC and nary a penny in decades of owning macs. You would have to pay me a vast sum of money to allow another Windows machine into my house. Also, one of the small consulting companies I do work for that is totally PC based has their machines totally locked down so that it's almost impossible to install new software onto them and they still get taken down by viruses every few months and have to wait for their IT consultant to show up and fix things (while I merrily continue to work on my MBP). What a friggin' joke! The only place where I have a fairly trouble free PC existence is at a large government institution where I have a field office. Of course, they have a large and busy full time IT staff to keep things working.
