Our apartment complex is considered as a luxury building located in a high rent area of town. Last week, we had a lockdown due to a shooting incident. That was the first for many tenants most of who falsely believed the outrageous rent alone should deter any criminal activity
miley-laughing001: A few weeks prior, I had a casual dialog with the maintenance man asking why there are no videocams in the entire building. He said liability would be too high due to individual privacy. Is it really? There are high priced hotels/resorts which are well-equipped with high tech videocam. Are there different laws for different types of buildings?

If there were video cameras, there would be demands for security guards to monitor them. If a security guard were to miss something, there would be lawsuits.

Management does not want to waste money on non essentials in the meanwhile there has been minor vandalism occurring repeatedly. Then "BANG!" gunshot got in the picture! We received a letter informing the tenants of the "burglary incident". They downplayed the seriousness of a drug deal gone bad. Now everyone knows.

Filming people where they live is very different from filming them where they are visiting.

I don't know if it is a specific law or just generic privacy concerns, but I had a similar conversation. I was told that I can set up cameras to record the areas visible from my windows and balcony. They would only consider recording common areas with on going security problems.

Not allowed here. However, they don't care what one videocams inside one's apt unit.

Having cameras at all entrances and exits that are not monitored at least alerts potential criminals that there will be a record of their arrival and departure, no matter what they do inside.
