Cell phone/service advice - legacy Verizon unlimited data iPhone 4
#1
Now that the iPhone 6 is almost out, it's time to evaluate my existing Verizon service - two lines, 750 minutes, unlimited 3G data, 25 cents a text, two iPhone 4 32GB phones. Main purpose, making calls, taking photos/movies, sending Messages/google voice texts (don't currently have an SMS plan), web surfing, email, FaceBook. Generally use less than a GB of data a month.

I hate to give up the data plan no the principal.
I'd like a new phone. One of the phones must be replaced with a newer model iPhone. I prefer to avoid 2-year contract and must have something on Verizon's network due to local geography.

Which newer iPhone do I buy?
Which other phone do I buy, the Nexus 5 and Moto G models have all intrigued me? I've been tempted to move to the prepaid plans to save money - current bill ranges between $133 and $140.

If you could put up with a contract, again, you could upgrade both phones to iPhone 6 base model for free, by trading in the two iPhone 4's. You could then get two individual lines of service on Verizon for $60 a month, plus taxes and fees, which would give you unlimited talk, text, and 2GB each of LTE data.

You have prepaid options, but we would need to know how much/little data you are wanting each month.

gabster, don't let philosophical idealism get in the way, especially when it's rooted in being "a better value" but ironically is the opposite.

There's no benefit to you keeping an unlimited plan. And likely no benefit to you avoiding a contract. You'll commit no sin here.

Stick around a little while - there will probably be some loophole that will allow you to keep your unlimited plans - always has been.

i don't know Verizon's plan offering but if they are the only provider game in your town and you have been happy with the service then why not go contract? do the math with their current offerings. could be that over time you pay nearly the same for everything contract as going non-contract and paying outright. or split the baby - contract one phone and buy the other using the sale of your IP4s to cut the cost.

In the past, the way you keep an unlimited plan with Verizon has been to buy the phone at full price (and thus, no 2 year contract either).

My brother has upgraded his phone a couple times and never lost his unlimited data.

I'd love to know how to get an upgrade without losing my unlimited data.

My current plan is 450minutes talk, no texting (use google voice) and unlimited data.

I never come close to using the talk time, but my data usage has been over 2GB routinely. The last 3 months were 2.3GB, 2.9GB and 2.2GB.

The last device "upgrade" I did, I paid full price for the phone in order to keep the plan.

How much do you pay per month for the unlimited data plan.
If you run the numbers, you still might be better switching to a different plan, getting a subsidized phone, and just paying for the overages, when you go over.
When I ran the numbers for my mother-in-law last year, it made a lot more sense just to switch plans.

I'd about quote all the advice above, very good! Whew, this phone/data shopping will wear a body plumb out! I mentioned it on another thread, I'm the one in my family with no iPhone, but Apple Pay will make me finally get one! Just for Apple Pay! Anyway, I need to begin the shopping whirlwind too. I loathe contracts, but deck is right on - ye commit no sin by using a contract, if it's the best long term deal. Great advice!
