I haven't come across that usage before; it dates as far back as 2003 according to the Urban Dictionary, as a Drinking game: Say "I'm Sofa King. We tarred it." until you can't anymore.
A Shop by the name of "The Sofa King" in Northampton, England, is apparently the origin, according to Wiktionary. "The Sofa King" was founded in 1999, so if there are any other variations of earlier origin, (Some mention "Todd" instead of "Tarred", but that doesn't make grammatical sense.), they haven't been as yet properly vetted.

I think it became pretty main stream after SNL used it in 2007.

They just need to learn our game of redefining the meaning of the word "unemployed".

Everything will be nice and rosy then.

After my post, I did a search on this Site, and found that the first person to use "Sofa King" here was BernDog, May 12, 2006 12:02PM.

He's going to have to pipe up about where he heard it from.
