Can I still download a copy of Mavericks?
#1
I'd like to have one before I even attempt Yosemite. I have full Time Machine back ups, but I'd sure like to have one just in case. And can I boot from aTM backup if I want to go back to Mavericks?

Shoot. I didn't think of that! It looks to me like Mavericks has been disappeared from Apple.

Is (was) it a download that I can grab and install later?

If you've previously downloaded it under your Apple ID then it should appear in the Purchases section of the App Store app.

Verified! I don't buy much form the app store, so it was easy to find. I still have access to a 10.8 download too.

I believe that it was on the new laptop, so I never dl it, sad but true . . .

I need a copy to update the old computer that is still on SL, then at least I would have a working computer in case yosemite screws everything up!

That no longer receives any updates from Apple and won't run modern software.

...

Mavericks is a huge jump from 10.6 and adapting to the interface changes (or correcting the default System/Finder settings to make it useful) after using 10.6 for so long is likely to be a painful and long process.

Yosemite revamps the whole thing again.

Given that, if your Mac is fast enough and has enough RAM to run Mavericks well (I recommend having at least 8GB RAM), you might as well make the leap to Yosemite. It won't be harder to adapt to than Mavericks and has the same system requirements.

I suggest that you get another external hard drive and make a bootable clone before installing Yosemite so that you can easily revert to 10.6 if you feel the need.

Since Mountain Lion, I have gotten into the habit of saving the downloaded file of any new OS I download from the App Store, in the event I want to install it later, say on another Mac. While it is true that past OS purchases do appear in one's "Purchased" list in the App Store app, one never knows when Apple might decide to remove that option.
