Question about downloading latest version of Mavericks
#1
I have a Mac Mini where I keep archive of my files. In my User folder, in Documents, I have a folder called 10.9 and there I saves the original Mavericks installer. A few months ago, I made a new folder, called 10.9.4 and I downloaded Mavericks installed which was 10.9.4 then.

last night I decided to download Mavericks installed again to have a 10.9.5 version. It was in my "Purchases", and it downloade just fine.

Now it started to install, I quit it. I wanted to move it from Applications (where I thought it was going to go) into my Documents folder. But I cannot find it into Applications. Upon some digging, I found out that the "Install OS X Mavericks" form 10.9 folder was overwritten since it now has a modification date of last night. Sure, I can restore the old installed from Time Machine. But why does Mac App store download this and put it in other places rather than into Applications folder like it was supposed to do?

Also, how can I tell whcih version is which, since all versions downloaded have the same filename? As of now I think I know which is which since I know where I saved them, except this last one which could be 10.9.5 (if that is indeed the latest version Apple provides) and whent by default into the 10.9 folder. I could move it to a 10.9.5 folder and then restore the 10.9 from Time machine. But I would still like to see the version somewhere. Can I tell by modification date?

for example, I have one Created Oct 16, 2013, Modified Dec 2, 2013
I have another one Created June 27, 2014, Modified August 18, 2014
and one Created Sept 8, 2014, Modified yesterday.

I guess Created date should tell me which version they are, Modified is probably when I downloaded them.

I've wondered about this sort of thing as well.

I took a peek at the installer app in the terminal, and it it's actually a directory.

Navigating into the Contents directory, there is a MacOS directory, and in that directory there is a file called Install OS X Mavericks.

I downloaded 10.9.4

The cksum command returns this checksum value:

2599019292 34144 Install OS X Mavericks
