december nyc trip
#1
looking for decent hotel sub $350 per night for a few nights in december

I like mid-town, but also like to walk and would to get decent room for price. Been many, many times on business but never for fun.

also, any hints on romantic sites for my first time visitor to NYC would also be appreciated.

can I preorder snow? (I know it's a little too early for good snow)

I'm impressed that you think some $350/night hotels might not be at least "decent."

The W (at Union Square or in SoHo) is very nice, with rooms that are small but slick (like a MacBook). Both have nice lounges.

I'll check the W

I like the macbook comparison.

thanks. December seems to send prices crazy in the city, prime demand I suppose. Much higher than I usually see.

check out http://www.playbill.com/index.php and http://www.broadway.com/ . You can sign up for special offers. A few years ago, we went to NYC late December for my 30th B-day and stayed at the Marriott Marquis Times Square for about $150/night. It was horribly cold, which made the walking tour of the Lower East Side on Christmas morning not as much fun as I figured it would be, but we had a great time.

the murray hill area is a nice in-between area for uptown/downtown activities. with lots of lower-mid range hotels.

I used to stay at the Salisbury. Real reasonable and a block from Central Park on 57th.

Check Hotels.com etc. too for cheaper rates at the same place.

Romantic sights?

In December?

Go to the bar Metrozor in Grand Central, have drinks on the balcony, and admire the trippy laser show on the ceiling.

Go to the Metropolitan Museum of Art on a Friday or Saturday night, have drinks and listen to the chamber music.

Go to the Nutcracker at Lincoln Center, then have drinks at Cafe des Artistes.

Just a few ideas....

Free,

Checkout broadwaybox.com for discounts on broadway and off-broadway shows if that is of interest. There are definitely decent hotels that are sub-$300 in the city. You just have to search the usual online haunts to find the deals.

That said, romantic sites are really subjective. It all depends on what you consider romantic. Ask yourself what you consider romantic and then tell us and we'll be able to offer you more guidance. For example, I know people who consider being at a small table in a bar romantic. That ain't for me. It may be for you.

a very funky, artsy building.
the rooms have a wide price range, some are pretty cheap.
i stayed there recently - the only bad thing i can say was the shower pressure was weak and the temperature fluctuated.

this one was nicer, and the breakfast was quite good.
