A Day with Napalm: Paint stripper
#1
Decided to take the door off the original medicine cabinet in my 1920 house and strip the paint off it.

There were at least five or six coats of paint ... I did over five complete strippings with high test liquid stripper. The original and last coat of paint was some very thick tan stuff--was almost like armor, must have been some lead based paint put on before 1945.

Whether it was all worth it or not I don't yet know. I hate using chemical stripper. But the wood revealed underneath all that paint has absolutely beautiful grain.

I don't think I would want a lap dance from a stripper named Old Paint. :oldfogey:

Woah.. I was doing much the same thing today, except my cabinet doors are crap plywood, so I was only worried about knocking off the loose paint. I only got down to the original shocking pink paint in a few spots.
Hole filler drying tonight, new primer goes on tomorrow!

Not a fan of chemical paint removers myself, but if you're trying to get down to NICE wood, its worth the effort!

When you have your hands on some nice wood, be careful with harsh chemicals. Confusedmiley-shocked003:

Well, it really needs to be a nice hardwood, no soft pine for me, eh?

One should always be careful when applying strippers to nice hard wood. Always use latex as a barrier to contamination from the stripper.

use latex paint as a barrier once the item is completely stripped?

use latex paint as a barrier once the item is completely stripped? It's a joke, son. Confusedmiley-laughing001:

Was going to say, "This thread is useless without pictures."

And then the thread took a decided turn to the NSFW.

Not trying to derail this thread...

Was the paint serving a structural purpose? That many coats starts to sound like reinforcement.

PS not expecting a response soon - OP spent sll day with a stripper, I bet they're tired...
