Dear Los Angeles...

I hate your guts, because:
A. You make me take blurry pictures.
B. You have traffic, as pictured, all the way down to San Diego.

The trick is living real close to where you work. I lived in San Diego and worked from my house. Nothing is better. Also lived in Sunset Cliffs and life is like adult Disneyland. If you get tricked into commuting you are screwed or really like listening to the radio.

Why live in a place where there needs to be a trick? What if one works in a crappy neighborhood? Life is not commuting to work. Life is also driving out for groceries in the evening, or going to friends' houses or to the movies, or sending the kids to the local park, or walking the dog.

The traffic in Los Angeles is legendary, abysmal, and sucks up huge quantities of residents' lives.

Yes, I know. Take the canyons. Drive a motorcycle. Live where you work. Etc. This are not responses for the godawful numbers of people stuck in godawful traffic, as in the picture in my first post. That was taken at 11:00A on a Saturday afternoon, and was not - in any way - unusual.

Make all the cuzzin' humpin' jokes you like. I'm comparing the reality of living in Los Angeles versus the reality of living here...or anywhere but L.A.

Looking at your picture, the traffic could have been a lot worse for the drive. At least traffic is still moving.

I lived in the South Bay area of LA for 49 years. Life wasn't bad as long as I never tried to go anywhere. It could easily take 2-3 hours just to get out of the LA basin, when going away for the weekend. It is not uncommon to run into a traffic jam at 10:30 or 11:00 at night on the 405.

Los Angeles is for people who dream. It's a tough place because everyone else is dreaming too. Used to be you moved to New York to "make it." Now you go to Los Angeles. People who lose their spirit get angry at it. It's crowded because it's "popular." And you can be what you want to be. There are no limits, because it's "all" being done there to one extent or another. Of course I live in the Los Angeles suburb (exurb) of Oakland. A mere 400 miles away.
