I'm running Cat 6 for ethernet and phone in our house, and want to put everything in wall jacks. Monoprice seems to have a decent price on good quality cable, and now I'm looking at keystone jacks for both connectors. The Cat 6 RJ-45 jacks seem to get good reviews:

But the RJ-11/12 jacks seem to get terrible reviews. And apparently their jacks (both ethernet and phone) only work in the Monoprice-branded plates. So, for some reason, it would seem as though they are proprietary.
So, I'm thinking of just picking up the cable for now and then adding the wall jacks when I find something that seems a little more universal. Any tips?

That is pretty standard that you have to buy matching plates for the keystone jacks. There isn't a universal standard.

ah, ok. I guess I could just do the monoprice jacks for RJ-45 and go with another dedicated RJ-11 plate/jack. Unless you have a recommendation for another source for good quality RJ-45 and RJ-11 jacks.

I used the Leviton because that's what my Home Despot had in builder's packs. They worked okay. FWIW... adding a run of RG-6 to each outlet may be a good idea as well.(use those quad keystone plates, you can have one RJ-11, two RJ-45, and one F-Type )
Just don't make the mistake my builder made and not leave enough slack in the cable 'closet' (or basement wall) for a patch panel or equivalent. I've had to go wild with jumpers, and it looks like a schizophrenic cat with an IT hobby was playing in there.

Did you know you can technically use an RJ45 jack to plug in an RJ11 cable?

You have to wire up the jack correctly for a phone line, but it can be done. It's my understanding that this might ruin a network card in a computer or other device because there's power over phone lines. Maybe, maybe not. I don't know for sure if this is true.

Why not wireless everything instead? Including the phone, you know a wireless one with multiple handsets. Or just dump the phone, meh. miley-shocked003:

I used the home depot ones because it's easy to get keystones for lots of other connections. The price difference didn't seem like much at the time.

When I was wiring our place I used Firefold. They have a good selection of bulk cable, keystone wall plates and jacks. I did use angled wall plates throughout which firefold no longer carries. A lot less strain on the cables. angled wall plate

yeah, you have a good point.
In my case, we still use an Ooma, so having the ability to energize household outlets for a few different wired phones is our preference. But I could probably get away with a phone jack in only 2-3 locations, and maybe I will decide to just run phone line to a few locations, who knows.
In terms of ethernet, I think I still prefer to have the option for it over wireless-only. And since we have the opportunity to run the cable while the walls are open, it seems wise to just do it so we have it. I'll be doing all the work myself, so it's just a matter of a few hours of my time and a couple hundred bucks for a bunch of Cat 6 cable and jacks. Again, I know we'd probably be OK with wifi only, but since the opportunity is there, I figure it'll give us a little more flexibility down the road.

thanks, that looks like a good option for the supplies. I'll check it out as I'm putting together my order.
