How to convert MP4 video file to Prores

Finally figured out why editing in ScreenFlow was so horrendous: I was using MP4 (.mov) files, which I've learned is a no no (spinning balls, crashing).

I've learned that I need to convert these MP4 files to one of these:

• Uncompressed (file sizes can be very large, though)
  
• ProRes
  
• DV
  
• M-JPEG
  
• JPEG2000
  
• Animation
  
• x264 lossless mode
  

I've tried Handbrake, MPEG StreamClip, and even the CS5 version of Media Encoder, and none of them seem to offer MP4-to-ProRes conversion (then again, they may but I'm not seeing it).

If anyone's familiar with this road, please pass on the way.

VisualHub will convert it to DV. Also makes large file sizes. VisualHub is obsolete and not supported anymore but will still run in Yosemite. You might be able to find a copy out there somewhere.

I've always had FCP on my machine so I get the ProRes codecs with that. But it looks like there might be some workarounds to get the codecs if you want (haven't tried these personally):

I wasn't able to get the codecs to work, but I like the idea of finding an older version of Final Cut Pro and using it to do all video conversions to Apple ProRes format. This is appearing harder than it should be. Both Adobe Media Encoder and MPEG Streamclip no longer have ProRes options.

Interesting. I got my copy for free. The software does seem to work though.
