Seeing max's Spoils of Summer thread ( http://forums.macresource.com/read.php?1...sg-1872346 ) below made me hungry for produce and got me wondering- are there vegetable salads that don't contain green leafy stuff of any nature?
I don't get out much, culinary-wise, so I don't know if salads like that are standard anywhere. I thought I might get some a couple large tomatoes (no cherry tomatoes!), a cucumber, some radishes, a red and a green bell pepper, an onion of some kind (purple?), then slice 'em up, and put a vinaigrette (non-Balsamic) on it. Maybe toss in some flaked tuna? No carrots, chick peas, or garbanzos.
It's just that going anywhere and ordering a salad gets you *lots* of leafy vegetable matter that I'm tired of wading through. Except for a good cole slaw salad. Even using spinach, it just seems like filler.
Just a random wonder.

sure, your idea of a salad is deffinately a salad. Not the kind usually seen at an average restaurant though. I love crunchy vegetables tossed with a dressing. Most leafy crap really bores me. The only 3 I really like are cabbage, romaine (both are crunchy) and baby spinach.
Cucumbers, sweet onion, cabage, maybe thin carot and celery slices, and a vinegrette sounds great to me. LOTS of croutons.

Greek salad. A real Greek salad: cukes, tomato (very ripe), some red onion and feta cheese. add olive oil. I can eat that every day.
bean and corn salad: add tomato, cilantro, red onion. all diced. also can eat this on every day.
many middle eastern type salads, such as tabbouleh, fattoush, anything wtih chickpeas.
bread salad, watermelon salad, tomato and corn salad..

I feel the opposite about the leafy stuff-- it's healthy and filling. I feel like I get all the other dietary elements in enough overabundance that being light on them for one meal is probably a good thing.

I agree, but...
Most leafy crap really bores me.
*Really* bores me. I do like Romain and baby spinach, but most salads have so much leafy vegetable matter, that to even approach an over abundance of the other elements, I'd be eating a head of lettuce.
I think I'll proceed with Racer's blessing and steal a few items from mr. big's suggestions.
Thanks, guys.

I'll check out those Croutons. Maybe TJ's has them.
They might never make it to the salad.
Those could be consumed straight from the bag.

Watermelon....... I just bought another one on Saturday. I hope you can't get watermelon poisoning, or I am a gonner.
There are lots of non-leafy salads. My husband is particularly fond of a cucumber and onion salad. I had a coucous and red pepper with avocado salad for dinner last night. Basically, in my mind, any combo of veggies with or without extras like meat or chicken or fish qualifies as a salad.
I love a good macaroni salad.
