Which adapter/port do I need to Connect this Monitor?
#1
Back in an earlier thread I mentioned I bought a new Acer K272HUL monitor from Newegg. Well I have it and it's hooked up to my 2.0 ghz 8gb 10.6.8 early 2009 C2D Mini which Apple says will support up to 1920 by 1200 pixels on a DVI or VGA display and up to 2560 by 1600 pixels on a dual-link DVI display using Mini DisplayPort to Dual-Link DVI Adapter.

The new display supports 2560x1440 native with DVI, HDMI and Displayport inputs and it came with a cable for each. However, the DVI cable appears to be a dual link DVI-D as opposed to single link DVI-D and everything I've read says this is a dual link monitor to be able to support the higher resolution.

I bought a 6' mini Displayport to Displayport cable thinking that would give me max resolution but it gives me a picture with wide black bars on each side (I'm assuming this is the single link output). I then hooked it up to the mini DVI to DVI adapter (that came with the mini) to the dual link DVI cable that came with the monitor and got full screen 1920x1200 picture.

Monoprice sells the Mini DisplayPort to Dual-Link DVI Adapter but it's $71! Am I looking at the wrong adapter? What do I need to get 2560x1440 from the mini?

Thanks.

What does the system pref give you as choices?

I would try a DisplayPort to MiniDisplayPort cable. My Dell monitor came with one, and the 2012 mini pumps our 2560 x 1440 on this cable. But, 2012 mini is a newer machine, the thunderbolt port has the same shape as a MiniDisplayPort. I think such a cable should work for you. I am not 100% sure though. YMMV.

EDIT: perhaps this one, and then use the DisplayPort that came with the monitor?

EDIT2: or a cable like this

Acer K272HUL Monitor inputs and maximum resolutions

"What are the maximum resolutions for each input on my Acer K272HUL monitor?

The K272HUL monitor supports the following maximum resolution.
- DUAL LINK DVI - 2560x1440 @ 60Hz
- DisplayPort (DP) - 1920 x 1080p @ 50Hz
- HDMI - 1920 x 1080i @ 60Hz
Note: These resolutions are only available if the video card is capable of supporting them.

Interesting

if you look at Customer Q&A on NewEgg, it seems some people got full resolution with Mini DisplayPort.:

Daniel A:HDMI will only support a resolution up to 1920x1080. To get the maximum resolution you will need to purchase a Mini-DisplayPort to DisplayPort Cable. You will then have to select the DisplayPort input via the control panel. There is a reset in the control panel, accessed by hitting the left button > middle button > scroll down to the wrench > move over to the right menu and down to reset. This resets the monitor back to its factory defaults. Dec 05,2014

Ashley N:I personally use a miniDisplay port to display port cable & it works great, with full resolution! I thought this was a great monitor for the value. I use it on a late 2011 Mac mini & a late 2013 MacBook pro Retina. Recently I plugged in a Amazon Fire stick (which was ok) into one of the HDMI ports, which looked good but the built in speakers weren't great. Good luck! Dec 05,2014

David Z:I use the displayport connection with my Mac and get the full 2560x1440. Dec 05,2014

Right. And Apple says my mini will support "..up to 2560 by 1600 pixels on a dual-link DVI display using Mini DisplayPort to Dual-Link DVI Adapter

That adapter is $71 at Monoprice unless I'm looking at the wrong adapter. Why is that particular adapter $71 and all the others are under $10?

Do you have any other resources available for testing?

I would like to know if the monitor, via the Displayport cable, works with another system.

mDP to DL-DVI adapters are expensive. It's not just a cable conversion. It has circuitry to do a signal conversion, or something? I also find the adapters to be a little buggy and annoying to use.

This is why I prefer more expensive monitors that have DisplayPort, but in your case, it might just be an odd circumstance where that model of mini will only do 2560x1440 over the adapter.
