Ministack Click of Death ?
#1
I bought one of these from our sponsor in mid 2014 to act as a time machine drive for my mini. And now it's happily going 'click, click, click'. So I unplugged everything to let the mini rethink it's connecetivity, and tonight I'll plug it back in and see what's what.

Is it safe to assume the 2TB drive is on its way out, and I should activate da 3 year warranty ? I'm always happy with NewerTech stuff, and OWC is really good at the customer service thing. It is a disappointment thought.

A clicking drive is probably not a happy drive.

Just as likely to be a bad power supply that isn't providing enough power

So true. I have a couple enclosures that seem to draw more power than other USB bus controllers and so the drive clicks instead of mounting. It seems possible a desktop drive could do the same thing if the power supply was going bad.

I would suggesting popping out the drive and testing in another enclosure/dock/adapter.

I had a ministack that clicked - turned out to be the fan.

Hmm. The drives definitely refused to connect. But...if the fan got gunked up and the drives overheated.... Da mini was certainly toasty on top. There are times I'm tempted to stick a big heat sink on top of it.

Very many furry critters in our house means pervasive fur flying and getting stuck. Time to pull out the Compressed Air Can of Doom ! Mu ha ha ha...

mattkime,
Nice picture. I had two Syquest 44 MB drives and used them for years without any problem.

I can't say the same for the Iomega Jaz drive used at work.
