Warning for Steam users on OSX 10.6.8
#1
Just a warning for Steam users still running OSX 10.6.8. Steam discontinued support for OSX 10.6.8 back in November, 2015. This means if you launch Steam after that date, it will update itself automatically and then crash on startup. Thanks Steam :bomb:

The are a few fixes online - somewhat complicated unless you're a programmer or want to use a pirated Steam app, and run the risk of being banned from Steam.

The simplest method is to trash the Steam app and restore from a backup copy that wasn't updated since November, 2015. Make a second copy and store it somewhere. When launching, be sure and change your preference to run in off-line mode. You will not be able to view the Steam community forum - but your old games should launch.

Thanks for the heads up. We bought a kids game off Steam on my old MBP. It can't go past 10.6.8. I'll have to figure out how to keep Steam from updating (if it's not already too late.)

Temporarily disable networking on that Mac and then change the preferences once you launch Steam?

Because they won't support a nine year old OS that the actual vendor has long since abandoned?

No. I dumped them a while ago and it had nothing to do with Snow Leopard. I'm not sure why anymore but they managed to tick me off on something or other. Lets just call it me having a cranky day and not wanting to pay. :oldfogette:

Fair enough. I don't use Steam myself.

Okay, well that changes everything. Totally supported and not five versions old. Smile
