Yes, this is a very nice lens. It gives you 90-95% of the IQ of the Sigma Sport 150-600mm for about 1/3 the price.
However, I'm waiting for Sigma and/or Tamron to come out with a 500 f/4 or 600 f/5.6 to compete with the Canikon exotic primes.
I'd be willing to pay up to $3500 for one!
I rented the Sigma Sport once. That thing is a beast! Larger and heavier than the non-Sport version. For image quality it was pretty good but not up to the Canon L standard. Like the Tamron, I found it was better up to about 500mm.
Sigma makes a 500/4.5.
If you shoot Nikon, I have heard good things about their new 200-500. For Canon shooters, the 100-400L version II is pretty awesome (and relatively affordable unlike their 200-400L).
And for either, Sigma makes a 400/5.6 fixed that can be found used for $200-$300 that is about 96% as sharp as the Canon 400/5.6L.
I have the 200-500, and everything you hear about it is true. Some say the Sigma Sport is slightly better, but when I tested my 200-500 against the Sport, the Nikon was slightly better (really, you could only see a difference on extreme pixel peeping).
Regardless, I'm greedy and would love a faster, affordable, and better prime that I can afford. Is the current Sigma 500mm prime close to the Canikon exotics? If so, then I might take a look.
You're right that the Sigma Sport is a beast. I tried it for a week and convinced myself that I could handle it if it improved on my Nikon. It didn't, so back it went. Perhaps I got a poor copy (and my Nikon is a really good one). Regardless, at this level, I suspect differences are minute to quite small.
