I have 3, all of which have something wrong. Recliner A is just uncomfortable - it hurts your back, but the frame and springs appear OK. Recliner B's springs look unequal with each other and it hurts your back. Recliner C's foot rest won't go back in position. A and C have strips where your inner knee touches that are fake leather and the strips are totally ruined. I have had springs and other parts break and pop and fall out, but I don't remember which chairs that happened to and where the parts are.
There's a guy down the road who works on them, but I want to know if they are hard to diagnose and fix with regular tools, or if it's money well-spent for someone to fix them. They are pretty good ones and about 25 years old. I can't find the brand names on them.

I put a similar recliner on the curb and placed a 'Free' sing on it and was very happy to see it get picked up.

I've fixed various bits and pieces in a few recliners over the years, including the infamous "You set my chair on fire dammit !" incident where I had to weld up a broken bracket and sort of forgot to have a hose handy. Whoops.
You can fix them. They're just furniture and mechanisms. Is it worth it ? Probably not.
Springs can't be 'repaired'. Just replaced. Back pain from a recliner ? Probably a worn spring. You can put a lumbar support pillow in there instead.

We have an older Morris leather recliner that is falling apart and the foot rest doesn't extend anymore. The wife wants to replace it but me and Louie think it's still pretty comfy.
(FYI, that's Louie in the chair, not me)

Dennis,
My guess is that it won't be cost effective to refurb them. Considering they're 25 years old, I'd say you've gotten your money's worth out of them. Time to buy new. Just avoid La-z-boy recliners unless you want to go cheap. If that's the case, you can find recliners from them for less than $300 each if you're willing accept a very limited type and color.
