3rd grade math
#1
Ok. What am I not seeing...

Draw a diagram of a rectangle with a perimeter of 40 inches. Label the sides in while inches so that no side is less than 12 inches in length. What is the area of the rectangle?

I think you're pretty much seeing it all...what's confusing you is that this is some of that NEW math they teach in school now. Yeah, Modern Math.

If no side can be less than 12 inches, then the minimum possible perimeter for a rectangle is 48 inches, and that is for the special case of a square. However, the problem clearly states that the perimeter is only 40 inches.

The problem is unsolvable as presented.

Thank you.

If no side can be less than 12 inches, how can the perimeter be less than 48 inches?

Never mind.

Seems that you are missing something. Is that exactly how it's worded? If it really says "label the sides in while inches so that," something already seems screwed up.

Obviously, all sides can't be 12 in. or more...unless they literally mean the "length" is 12 in. or more and the "width" is 8 in. or less. But that would still leave several possible dimensions and several corresponding areas. Poorly-worded no matter how you slice it.

I would like to see the solution to THAT problem! :bomb:

Not so many years ago, a provision of the much-hated "No Child Left Behind" law stated that in order to teach, say, 3rd grade math... the teacher had to be able to pass a test (I think) two grade levels above the level they taught. So, a 3rd grade teacher would have to be able to pass a basic 5th grade math test.

NCLB had a lot of problems... but after reading, and re-reading, and re-re-reading, this problem, that provision isn't looking so bad now.

Unless there is a far-too-clever for 3rd grade trick answer here...

Had the requirement been 48" or more instead of 40, it would have been solved quickly.

Maybe it's a problem meant to keep students busy for awhile so the teacher can step out for a break.
