buying an inexpensive pc laptop
#1
My daughter needs a pc to run .exe files for a spanish class study cd. Not sure I want the expense and hassle of getting a macbook/ bootcamp/XP

I have been looking at inexpensive pc laptops. Toshiba, hp, lenovo 3000.

Toshiba satellite with a duo core
1.6GHZ
512ram
80gig

for $599.

What do you think, Get what you pay for junk?

or

Ok, for school work basic needs?

I think "you get what you pay for" does apply here.

There was some good advice in the previous thread you started on this general subject: http://forums.macresource.com/read/1/166128/166128

Thanks for reminding me about that post.

My question today was more related to inxpensive PC laptops, after looking at them today it just made me wonder how in the world they can sell them so cheap and what their longevity might be.

I saw some for $479 but they had AMD chips not duo core.

I was leaning towards the imac, for the value vs the mackbook. But my wife thinks it should be a laptop for portability.

As a technician that works on all brands I can tell you the Lenovo will be a far better investment than Toshibas and others. I see what breaks and how expensive they are to repair,

If you can wait a bit, there's always a cheap laptop at BreastBuy on Black Friday.

how much computer do you really need to run a spanish class CD?

if she's gonna take Spanish for awhile, maybe consider an older, higher end, model w/ a long warranty that you can score for cheap vs. a current sale model w/ short warranty...

Don't need much of a computer to run the files, but I'm sure she would want to use it for other school work, itunes, msn, digital photos.

If she's going to use it for her everyday computer, do you really want her going over to the Dark Side? Most people stick with what they get accustomed to, even if it's Windows. Get the MacBook, buy Parallels to run the Windows DVD, and an eBay copy of XP Home. Ultimately, she'll thank you.

This is a Mac board, after all!

While I prefer Macs, that Toshiba really is a good deal. With a 1.6GHz Core Duo, you're getting a lot of computer for the money. You can't even buy a Mac mini with a Core Duo for that. Too bad it won't run OS X.
