thinking about using a cheap android tablet as a jukebox
#1
Anyone else doing this? I bought a bluetooth set of speakers that sit about 10 feet from my mac, but the sound still cuts out more frequently than I'd like. Tried AirPlay with an Airport Express, and had the same problem. Most of my music is NOT in iTunes. I use a variety of program to play music, VLC being one of them. What I was thinking of doing was putting a bunch of music on a MicroSD card, sticking that card in a cheap android tablet, and hooking it directly to the speakers, which do have an auxiliary input. I have a tablet someone gave me, but it only takes up to a 32GB card. I tried a 128GB card, but it didn't seem to recognize it. I see the Amazon Fire tablet will take up to a 200GB card, and it's less than $50 new. It would give me a half decent visual interface to play my music.

Hmm, I guess nobody else is considering this.

I did figure out that the 128GB microSD card I tried to put in was formatted in exFAT format, which the tablet didn't recognize. Once I formatted it to just FAT, it recognizes it. So now I just have to load it up with music. I'll try to remember to post a followup later.

I considered it for a car, but decided against it.

For the home, I think the quality of the audio is key. Report back if you do it.

Here's my first update:
I was able to upload about 8GB of music to the tablet. At first I had some issues, but it was the cable. Once I switched it, the transfer went ok. You have to download an app called "Android File Transfer" for the tablet to show up in a window on your Mac. It gives the option to load right to either the tablet or the SD card.

Right now, I'm using the Google Play Music app to view/play the music. It didn't look too bad, but then I updated the app. Big mistake. It is less user friendly than the version it had come with. But there's a ton of other apps you can use. To unlock extra features, you gotta pay. A couple looked good and cost about $4.

I haven't hooked it to my speakers yet, but it sounds ok through headphones. I'll start a new thread after I've played with it for a while.
