For those who've updated to 4K from 1080 monitors
#1
I'm still running my MacPro (2013 model) off of 2 1080s, and it's time to upgrade.

Question to anyone who's already made that jump: do you find reading easier? What are the main improvements you noticed? I supposed it's a dumb question because the answer may just be "everything is sharper."

More real estate was my primary reason.....

What is your current size display and distance? What are you planning for size and distance for the 4K display, are you going for a retina experience or a bigger screen a few feet away so you don't need reading glasses?

I currently use dual 24-inch 1080 monitors, and they're 28-34 inches from my eyeballs. I spend inordinate amounts of time in front of them, about 12 hours a day. Tons of video conferences on zoom video conference, writing training manuals, video how-tos, and reading.

I wear prescription glasses, but often can get away with 1.25 reading glasses (headed towards 1.5 lately). Increased clarity wouldn't be a bad thing.

I went from a 2010 iMac @ 2560 x 1440 to a 5K iMac, and if theres a difference Im not seeing it. Although to be fair, I havent looked at my old iMac in a long time.

But Im with max -- screen real estate.

I run 3 screens, and my 24" 1920 X 1080 screen is the "small" one.

Unless you have an unlimited budget, Id probably prefer 2 nice 27" monitors over 2 budget 4K ones.

A couple of Dell U2717Ds with the "infinity" edge would be my first choice, $500 on sale right now too. I have the previous model, the U2715D, and the bezel is .25". way small. Looks like they fixed what was wrong with mine and added 2 USB ports to the side edge again.

thank you, jdc. That's a good thing to consider, basically a higher end sharper non-4K screen. Even two of Dell's 24" InfinityEdges would work for my needs (vs two 27s). I've never gone with a dual monitor stand, but I may on this next go around (Dell's offerings here look good).

I have a 27" 5k mac and a 27" LG 2560x1440 side by side - there is no question that reading tiny, tiny text on the imac is easier. You wouldn't see much difference if they were not side by side. I also have an old dell 24" 1920x1200 - both of the 27" are miles better than the dell.

Moving to 2 new 24" monitors gets you nothing. IMHO wouldnt waste my money on that.

My 5K iMac is next to my Dell 27", and yeah, sure, the 5K is more crisp with tiny text.

But the rest of the time, not sure I can tell.

So part of the added clarity comes from going from a 24" to a 27", is that correct?

I don't particularly need more real estate. I mainly want crisper text and images, if that's an option.

The display I have heard the best comments on is the OLED Lenovo X1 Thinkpad but they have not made it as a separate display/monitor yet.
